Pakistan has been actively working on the development of IDN ccTLD

ISLAMABAD (MEDIA)

The Ministry of IT, Government of Pakistan has been actively working on the development of IDN ccTLD (Internationalized Domain Names) (country code Top-Level Domain). ICANN has approved the application for “پاکستان.” and the delegation process, which includes specification of ccTLD  structure and policies etc. is under way.

Formation of the registry will enable all Pakistanis to register domain names in Urdu instead of traditional ASCII English, which is the only option available to Pakistanis currently. Establishing localized IDN ccTLD will not only promote development of localized content but it will also be beneficial to masses who can only read and write in Urdu.

In this context, Center for Language Engineering, Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore is organizing a workshop with an aim to provide a platform to all stakeholders to give their feedback and comments on policy issues related to IDN ccTLD in Pakistan.

The workshop will be held on April 20, 2012. Those who cannot attend the workshop in person can still give their feedback through the online survey form which will be active till April 19, 2012. Agenda of the meeting includes finalizing policy issues including, but not limited to:

    Domain registration requirements

Registry governance, business and regulatory model

    Registry operational policies

The comments and feedback will be collated and presented to Ministry of IT, Government of Pakistan as recommendations for the policy of ۔پاکستان IDN ccTLD.
