President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, making it an official part of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The bill had earlier been passed by both the National Assembly and the Senate with the required two-thirds majority.

The Senate approved the amendment during a session chaired by Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, where Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the revised text for clause-by-clause approval. The National Assembly had also endorsed the amendment the previous day, securing the support of 234 members – ten more than the required 224. However, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) opposed the bill.

The 27th Amendment introduces eight new clauses to the Constitution. One major change modifies Clause 2 of Article 6, specifying that any act of high treason cannot be validated by any court. Additionally, the term “Constitutional Court” has been added to Clause 2 to include this body alongside the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Under the amendment, the incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan will continue to hold the title until the completion of their tenure. After that, the position will be assigned to the most senior judge of either the Supreme Court or the Federal Constitutional Court.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the federal cabinet has been convened for today to approve necessary adjustments to existing laws in accordance with the new constitutional provisions.
