Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta has declared the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for the interpretation (tafsir) of the Holy Quran to be prohibited.

According to Arab media, Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta — the country’s official religious advisory body — has issued a fatwa stating that the use of AI applications, including tools like ChatGPT, for Quranic interpretation is impermissible.

The fatwa was issued in response to a question from a petitioner.

Dar al-Ifta emphasized that relying on AI to understand the Quran could lead to the spread of misinformation and misleading interpretations.

The fatwa stated that religious teachings require a cautious and well-informed understanding, which can only be provided by qualified scholars who possess extensive knowledge and experience.

It further said that for the interpretation of the verses of the Holy Quran, reference should be made to authentic commentaries, reliable exegetes, and recognized religious authorities, such as established scholars and acknowledged religious institutions. These authorities ensure that correct religious teachings are conveyed to the public.

It is noteworthy that this fatwa has emerged at a time when educational, religious, and research institutions around the world are debating the benefits and drawbacks of using AI technology for various applications, including religious education and academic research.
