Supreme Court disposes of appeal against Maryam Nawaz on basis of withdrawal

In a significant development, Supreme Court of Pakistan has disposed of National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) appeal against Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Senior Vice President and Chief Organizer of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), in Shamim Sugar Mills case on the basis of withdrawal.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Shahid Waheed conducted hearing of the plea here on Tuesday.
“The National Accountability Bureau is withdrawing its plea after new amendments to NAB law,” NAB Prosecutor Sattar Muhammad Awan told the court. The court then disposed of the application on the basis of withdrawal.
NAB had approached the Supreme Court to cancel the bail of Maryam Nawaz in the Shamim Sugar Mills case. The prosecutor urged the court to dispose of the appeal rather than dismissing the order.
A written statement submitted in the court on the behalf of NAB. In the written reply, it was stated it has now powers regarding the case after amendments to NAB law. Chief Justice remarked that the application was disposed of on the basis of withdrawal.
NAB prosecutor argued that in order sheet, it should be written disposed of instead of withdrawal. To this, Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial remarked, “Because you would like it.”
