Council on e-commerce formed

ISLAMABAD ( MEDIA REPORT )

The first meeting of the newly established National Advisory Council (NAC) on e-commerce, chaired by Minister of Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan, will be held on August 18.

The 48-member policy unit – comprising senior officers of various ministers and relevant stakeholders – was formed by the Ministry of Commerce on August 9 after a delay of several months. The NAC is tasked to formulate the National Policy Framework on E-commerce.

The ministry took the initiative after directives from the Prime Minister Secretariat were issued, with a deadline of September 15 to finalise the draft law of policy for submission to the federal cabinet for approval.

Last year, a joint working group on the formulation of e-commerce policy framework was constituted but the outline it produced after well over one year did not impress Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif.

E-commerce unit: Through another notification, the commerce ministry established an E-commerce Unit for the Formulation of an E-policy Framework. The policy unit will have 15 members from both government and private sector. The policy unit will be headed by an additional secretary of the commerce ministry and a co-chair will be from the private sector.

The co-chair and three other members from the private sector will be nominated by the NAC to be made part of the policy unit.
