If you often find yourself scrolling through X (formerly Twitter) and wondering which country those accounts that constantly talk about politics belong to, you might soon get your answer. The social media platform owned by Elon Musk is testing a new feature that will show which country an account is associated with, along with the date when its username was last changed.
X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, explained that the company is experimenting with displaying new details on users’ profiles. The aim of this change is to curb the spread of fake accounts and misleading information on the platform.
In a post on X, he stated that when users read content on the platform, they should also be able to verify its authenticity.
He further added that fact-checking is essential in important matters. According to him, the company will begin internal testing of this feature within the next few days.
Instagram already has a similar feature, though location data there is optional. Nikita Bier indicated that X might also keep it optional; however, if users choose to hide this information, the app will display a note on their profile indicating that it has been hidden.
