In line with the Chief Minister’s prison reforms agenda, a major milestone has been achieved to make Punjab’s prisons more secure. An agreement was signed at the Punjab Home Department between the Prisons Department and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) for the Punjab Safe Jail Project. The agreement was signed by IG Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir and NRTC General Manager Syed Aamir Javed.

According to the Punjab Home Department spokesperson, under the Safe Jail Project, 12,071 modern cameras will be installed across prisons in Punjab, with the government allocating Rs. 5 billion for the project. The prisons will also be equipped with 615 panic buttons and public address systems, 328 body cameras, 615 walkie-talkie systems, 41 X-ray body scanners, 41 under-vehicle surveillance systems, and a facial recognition system.

The spokesperson added that to enhance security, 133 software solutions and 24 video conferencing systems for prisons are also included in the agreement. The modern cameras will have the capability to recognize faces and vehicles, monitoring inmates as well as prison staff attendance and movement. A visitor management system will also be operational to monitor all visitors.

One key feature of the Safe Jail Project is that any violation of rules will automatically trigger an alarm. All entry and exit points, offices, inmate barracks, security walls, jammer areas, kitchens, hospitals, and library areas will be under surveillance.

As per the agreement, NRTC will submit monthly and annual performance reports. The project will be completed in 11 central prisons and headquarters by December, while the deadline for completion across all prisons in Punjab has been set for June 2026.

The spokesperson further said that alongside project completion, a five-year operations and maintenance contract has also been finalized. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority will provide technical assistance in the installation of cameras, while monitoring will be carried out through control rooms established in all prisons, regional DIG offices, the IG Prisons office, and the Home Department.
