The Indus Waters Treaty Cannot Be Suspended, Says World Bank

The Indus Waters Treaty contains no clause for suspension, nor is the Bank a mediator, says World Bank President

Washington  (  Web  News  )

The World Bank has made it clear that the Indus Waters Treaty cannot be suspended, as there is no provision in the agreement that allows for its suspension. World Bank President Ajay Banga stated unequivocally that the treaty includes no clause for suspension and that the Bank does not act as a mediator, but merely as a facilitator. He added that the Bank can only engage experts to help resolve disputes.

According to media reports, in a media interview, the World Bank President emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty has not been suspended; rather, India has halted its implementation. He stressed that debates over how the Bank should resolve the issue are meaningless because any termination or modification of the treaty requires mutual consent from both parties—Pakistan and India.

He further stated that the Indus Waters Treaty is an international legal document, and any violation of it could have negative repercussions not only regionally but globally as well.
