The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday hinted at declaring former prime minister and Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, his aides Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry as absconders during the hearing of a contempt case.

Four-member bench of the ECP headed by Member ECP Sindh Nisar Ahmed Durrani and comprising Member ECP Balochistan Shah Muhammad Jatoi, Member ECP Punjab Babar Hassan Bharwana and Member ECP Khyber Pakhtunkwa Justice (retd) Ikramullah Khan heard the case against Imran Khan, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry.

The bench heard case pertaining to the contempt of court notice taken on use of intemperate, un-parliamentary language and contemptuous remarks against the Election Commission of Pakistan by Imran Khan Niazi, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry. Meanwhile the bench heard the case pertaining to the contempt of court notice taken by ECP on the use of intemperate, un-parliamentary language and contemptuous remarks against Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Sikandar Sultan Raja by Imran Khan Niazi and Fawad Chaudhry.

Three political leaders skipped the hearing and applications on their behalf for exemption from appearance had been submitted. The lawyer argued that Imran Khan had injury, Fawad Chaudhry was in Karachi and Asad Umar was out of the city.

Member Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Justice (retd) Ikramullah Khan remarked was it not responsibility of prominent people to appear before the court and continued if the same was repeated action will be taken against them.

He further stated, “For how long you will take exemption from appearance? We issue warrants while High Court nullifies them, with orders to continue proceeding on the matter. He further hinted at initiating the proceedings for declaring the PTI leaders as absconders if they don’t appear before ECP.”
