Pakistani Students Win Laurels for Country at Int’l Science Olympiads

Representing Pakistan in various International Science Olympiads in Vietnam, Georgia, Hong Kong and Switzerland, Pakistani students have won four Bronze Medals and one Honourable Mention for the country.

Different teams of students selected under STEM Careers Programme took part in 27th International Biology Olympiad, 48th International Chemistry Olympiad, 57th International Mathematics Olympiad and 47th International Physics Olympiad.

These annual Olympiads provide pre-university science students from around the world an opportunity to compete in solving challenging theoretical and experimental science problems. Most of the Pakistani students invariably get scholarship for their higher studies in leading universities of the world.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) are the joint organisers of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Careers Programme for talented youth having careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The dedication and hard work of teams leaders from home institutes including National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) Faisalabad, HEJ Research Institute Karachi, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Lahore and PIEAS Islamabad and members of STEM Careers Programme at HEC in selecting and preparing these talented students and providing logistic support played a key role in this achievement.

The 27th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) was hosted by Hanoi, Vietnam from July 17-24 July, 2016. Of four students who participated from Pakistan in the event, Muhammad Alamgir Khan from Cadet College Hassan Abdal, Bakhtawar Ahmad from Hamza Army Public School & College, Rawalpindi and Saffa Fatima from Lahore Grammar School won Bronze Medals. IBO team was led by Dr. Muhammad Saeed and Dr. Asma Imran of NIBGE Faisalabad.

The 47th International Physics Olympiad was held in Zurich, Switzerland from July 10-17, 2016. The team leader was Dr. Shahid Qamar and deputy team leader was Dr. Aman ur Rehman of PIEAS. Maimoon Siddiqui from Karachi Grammar School won an Honorable Mention among five Pakistani students.

The 48th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) was held in Georgia from 23 July-August 1, 2016. In IChO, Muhammad Ismail from FFC Grammar School, Mirpur Mathelo, Sindh won bronze medal for Pakistan.

The 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) was hosted by Hong Kong from July 6-16 July, 2016. Six students participated from Pakistan in the event. IMO team was led by Dr. Sarfraz Ahmed and Dr. Hani Shakir of COMSATS Lahore.
