The telecom sector has contributed revenue of more than Rs.866.23 billion

The telecom sector has contributed revenue of more than Rs.866.23 billion to national exchequer in nine years, showing a reasonable growth with each passing year. The contribution included General Sales Tax, activation tax, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)’s deposits and other taxes. As per latest figures issued by PTA, major contribution has been witnessed in 2011-12 when the sector contributed Rs133.40 billion revenues and acordingly, the GST collections from the sector spiked by 20% to reach Rs. 57.8 billion whereas Rs. 7.5 billion activation tax also collected. The PTA deposits reached to Rs. 14.6 billion whereas other taxes are Rs. 53.5 billion.
The data showed an increase in revenue contribution with each passing year as it was Rs.38.4 billion in 2003-04 and touched Rs.133.4 billion mark last year.
The sector started crossing Rs.100 billion mark in term of revenue contributions from 2006-07 and reached Rs.111.63 billion in 2007-08, Rs 112 billion in 2008-09, Rs.109 billion in 2009-10 and Rs.117 billion in 2010-11.
The data said PTA’s contributions comprising all its receipts including initial and annual license fee, annual spectrum administrative fee, Universal Service Fund (USF) and Research and Development Fund contributions, numbering charges, license application fee etc.  Others included customs duties, WH Tax and other taxes.
