AT&T talks up Windows Phone with new device launch

US number two operator AT&T said it will offer three more devices powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, describing itself as “the US leader in Windows Phone.”

The company is to offer Samsung’s Focus S, which is powered by a 1.4GHz processor; HTC’s Titan (pictured), which offers “the largest screen in AT&T’s smartphone portfolio at 4.7 inches;” and the Samsung Focus Flash, which is “designed to hit the market packed with value.” All three will be powered by the latest version of the Windows Phone platform, Windows Phone 7.5 (codenamed Mango).

According to Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of devices at AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets: “our customers love Windows Phones which is why we’ve sold more of them than anyone else.”

The operator also said it will be “among the first” to start updating existing Windows Phone handsets to Windows Phone Mango, with availability “this fall.” Its portfolio already includes devices from HTC, LG Electronics and Samsung.

AT&T was one of the launch partners for Windows Phone 7 last year, alongside smaller rival – and now merger partner – T-Mobile USA. Verizon Wireless and Sprint were missing from the list due to the lack of devices supporting CDMA network technology, a situation which was not rectified until early this year.
